Developed in 1987 by The European Quality of Life Group, the EQ-5D is a widely used general heath PRO tool that can be applied to a wide range of health conditions. EQ-5D is used to quantify health-related quality of life (HRQL). This tool is self-reported and measures a patient’s health across five different domains: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression.
The EQ-5D provides a simple yet descriptive profile and single index value for health status that can be used in the clinical and economic evaluation of healthcare.
The original version of the EQ-5D contained three response options for each questions: no, some, extreme problems. In 2005, a new version of the tool that contained five response options was released: “no, slight, moderate, severe or extreme.” This new version was validated in a diverse patient population, and measurement properties of this ‘EQ-5D-5L’ tool were superior to the good old ‘EQ-5D-3L’ tool.
The EuroQol Group decided this tool is in the public domain and may be used without cost, provided that the research isn’t funded by the pharmaceutical industry or other commercial organization such as medical device manufacturers. That being said, it’s recommended that EuroQol Group members be involved in substantial commercial research projects where the EQ-5D is being used.
