AAOS 2020 Data Specifications Updates

American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) programs have an annual data specification release and sunset cycle. The annual data specification release and sunset cycle provide simplification of the data transition process. The release and sunset cycle allows clinicians to understand the timeline for new releases of data elements and when the oldest specifications will be removed from registry submission eligibility. According to AAOS, this update is necessary to improve the quality of data collected, reduce the data entry burden, and allow the registry to grow with the orthopedic profession.

The AAOS data specification sunset cycle has landmark dates on January 1st and June 1st. On January 1st AAOS released updated data specifications and data dictionary. The newest release of January 1st, 2020 marks the first hard release update since 2018. June 1st AAOS sunsets the oldest data specification. There were no data specifications sunset in 2019. The next data specifications sunset is scheduled for June 1st, 2020. At this time the oldest data specifications Version 7.13.2017 will be sunset and removed from registry submission eligibility.
