Developed in 1987 by The European Quality of Life Group, the EQ-5D is a widely used global heath PRO measure that can be applied to a wide range of health conditions. This measure is used to quantify health-related quality of life (HRQL).

This PROM measures a patient’s health across five different domains: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression.

The EQ-5D provides a simple yet descriptive profile and single index value for health status that can be used in the clinical and economic evaluation of healthcare.

The original version of the EQ-5D contained three response options for each questions: no, some, extreme problems. In 2005, a new version of the tool that contained five response options was released: “no, slight, moderate, severe or extreme.” This new version was validated in a diverse patient population, and measurement properties of this ‘EQ-5D-5L’ measure were superior to the good old ‘EQ-5D-3L’ measure.
