Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON)

There are roughly 20,000 ACL reconstruction surgeries performed each year. Created in 2002, the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) main goal is to enroll and follow a certain population of patients who have undergone anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery, and establish predictive models for patient-specific outcomes. MOON was founded by three orthopedic surgeons, two of whom practiced at Cleveland Clinic, and the other from Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute. The Moon Group aims to identify short and long-term prognosis of sports function, activity level, and general health through validated patient-reported outcomes.

The MOON Group has since expanded to a total of seven institutions with 17 participating surgeons. It’s collected data from more than 4,400 ACL reconstructions to date. While most data registries collect only Level I data, the MOON Group collects Level II and Level III data as well. With a goal to collect sufficient follow-up data, the MOON group has achieved an outstanding 80 percent follow up-up rate at two and 6 years post op, which tops the 50 and 60 percent rates that the much larger orthopedic registries in Europe have achieved.
